The budgie, native to Australia, was first scientifically described in 1805. Over the 19th century, these birds were brought to Europe and the US, leading to widespread popularity and captive breeding. With advancements in breeding techniques, a multitude of budgie varieties have emerged from the 1920s to the present day... The male has a dark blue cere (skin at the base of the upper mandible surrounding the nostrils). In the female this is brownish when breeding and light blue otherwise. Young Budgerigars are similar to the adult birds, but are duller and have a dark brown eye (which is white or yellow in adults). Budgerigars, Melopsittacus undulatus .

Budgies need warmer climates, and in the wild, an Australian budgie can live in open savannas, grasslands, open forests, grassy woodlands, and farmland. They live throughout Australia as long as there's water nearby. Because they fly so much, they can typically withstand some drought conditions, but they do need to drink water each day.. The little "Budgie," native to Australia, is a very popular cagebird, so it was probably inevitable that some would escape and establish a wild colony in our area. The west coast of Florida has a sizeable population, and there are some elsewhere in Florida as well. Lone escapees may be seen almost anywhere in North America.
